Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast

During the mass, we will have the representation of the appearance of Mary to Juan Diego by our 6th-grade students as well as our 7th & 8th-grade students participating in the mass.
One of our Diocesan Course of Study beliefs is that the World Languages classes should be a part of the Catholic School experience, and the Culture Standard states “through the target language, students examine the relationship among the products, practices, and perspectives of the target culture(s). Students enhance their understanding by making cultural comparisons and developing cultural insights”.
Ms. Theresa Valentine's second grade class recently conducted an experiment focused on their study of air resistance or the question "Does air take up space?" The students each constructed a parachute that they then tested out by releasing their parachutes from the Big Toy on the playground. They recorded their observations in their weather research journals when they returned to their classroom. Key learning from this experiment was air is all around objects, motionless or falling and air resistance slows the fall of objects. Kudos to Ms. Valentine, Mrs. Bishop and the second graders for a job well done!
Mrs. Zucker's first grade class recently participated in a STEM activity entitled Balance - Motion and Materials. The students were challenged to explain the use of counter weights and how they affect balance. They were given card stock, triangles, clothes pins, and popsicle sticks to explore the concept of balance. The students had to determine what is needed for balance (equal weight) when an object is placed on a balance point. Kudos to Mrs. Zucker and her students for an awesome learning experience.
Mrs. Pinciotti's class recently participated in a Pumpkin Activity Day. Stations were set up in the classroom that focused on math questions with a pumpkin theme. The students visited each station in pairs to answer questions such as estimating the circumference and weight of a pumpkin. They also had to identify the vertical lines on a pumpkin and estimate how many vertical lines the pumpkin had. Some of the station activities included graphing their estimations, reading, and counting. All in the all the students had a lot of fun while learning some very important math concepts that I probably didn't study until 3rd grade at the very earliest! Kudos to Mrs. Pinciotti, Mrs. Shepherd and their students for all of their hard work in making this hands-on problem solving activity a huge success.
SFD Wellness Night for Parents

On a beautiful sunny day, Friday October 13th, our K-8 St. Paul students and staff came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the last apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. Father Charlie and Father Lonzo conducted the prayer service at the Grotto in front of St. Paul Church. At the conclusion of what was a beautiful prayer to our Holy Mother, Father Charlie and Father Lonzo blessed all of those present with holy water from our church mixed with holy water that Mrs. Ford brought back from her trip to Fatima many years ago. Imagine receiving this special blessing with Holy Water from Fatima. The students behavior at the prayer service was so very reverent. Our St. Paul students are awesome! All the students and staff received a book mark comemerating the 100th anniversary our Fatima that were blessed during the prayer service.
Last week members of the Corna Kokosing construction team visited Mrs. Theresa Valentine's second grade classroom. The children were especially eager to meet "Matt the Welder." Mrs. Valentine's class actually completed a STEM project that focused on the building project. The children began the project by making large drawings of the construction site from the view of the Big Toy on the playground. They then refined their drawings and included them in a thank you note that they gave to the CK team when they visited their classroom. They were particularly entrigued with the sparks from the welder that they could see from a distance.
Matt the welder talked with the class about his trade and showed them different examples of a good weld and a bad weld. Melissa Twart Darwin and Dan Schick also talked about their responsibilities as engineer and project manager. At the end of the visit, the children presented their thank you notes to the team and sang song they created called, you guessed it, Matt the Welder. Interim reports will be published today at 3:00 pm. Please note that the report has changed this year. The teachers have included the essential standards that have been taught over the last four weeks. An interim report is not a report card and so you may notice that there are some content areas with no progress codes assigned.
Teachers have assigned progress codes to only the standards that your child is not meeting at this time. Since interims are issued half-way through the quarter, coding progress as M for mastery or W working toward mastery, could be confusing to parents. Therefore, our team decided it was most important for parents to know the standards being covered so far this quarter and to be advised if their child is not meeting the standard (N).
If your child’s interim report is not what you hoped, consider taking the time to sit down and talk with your child to understand what he/she thinks the problem might be. Once you’ve heard your child’s concerns it might be necessary to request a parent/teacher conference in order to obtain additional information and perhaps develop a plan to help your child. Always keep in mind that it is not about how fast students master learning but rather about the persistence and effort they have put forth. “No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into an accomplishment (Dweck. 2016).”
As I posted previously, our students are really enjoying watching the construction project take shape. Two of our kindergarten students in the picture above were captivated during recess with the workers in action. Recently I purchased a number of library books related to construction and the engineering arm of STEM. The teachers have been reading them to the students and soon the students will be able to also check them out for their own reading pleasure. One of the lower elementary books focuses on the sounds made by construction tools and machines. One of our kindergarten teachers told me that some children can actually now identify what tool or machine is being used just by hearing the noise it makes. Teachers are also using the construction as a teachable moment by having the students take mini-tours around (within a safe distance) the construction site and sometimes making drawings of what they see. We have invited Corna Kokosing's project manager; Dan Schick and the project's engineer; Melissa Tewart-Darwin, to talk with our students about their jobs in the days to come. Engaging the children in this type of real-world learning is an opportunity to use what some may consider an inconvenience or mess, as an effective strategy for teaching STEM. It is truly an exciting time in the history of our school.
